OLD SAN FRANCISCO:
almost all the interesting pictures here were photographed or painted before I came to the States.......crossing the Pacific ocean, SF was the first city I stepped on this foreign land.......right away, I fell in love with this town..... amazing scenery, unique architecture, beautiful weather, friendly people, free atmosphere, melting pot culture.....after all these years, after traveling around the world..... SF still is & always will be where I feel at home, at ease... my heart & soul truly desire & stay....enjoy the legendary sites and interesting stories......

1930s - The Aquatic Park Casino - Restaurant and Dancing -
Curtis J. shares this matchbook cover he found.
The graphics are classic art deco, as well as the structure.
I'll bet this was a great place!
1908 - The newly rebuilt Flood Building at Market and Powell Streets.
This is a beautiful hand tinted photo shows reconstruction well under way.
1937 - Joe DiMaggio's Grotto Restaurant -  Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco.

Marilyn Monroe married baseball great Joe DiMaggio
at San Francisco City Hall on January 14, 1954 (see photo).
Joe DiMaggio owned a restaurant in Fisherman's Wharf for many years

1939 - The Fairmont Hotel - California at Powell Streets - In this postcard view of the hotel, there was a lower garden area just above Powell Street. The cars, people and view are all imagined, but charming. The 1939 Golden Gate Exposition sparkles invitingly near the Bay Bridge on the right.

Early 1950s - Fairmont Hotel - The Tonga Room - This colorful postcard shot was obviously taken during the day. There is only one couple who is predominantly in the frame. A few others scattered in the back.

1954 - The "Top of the Mark" at the Mark Hopkins Hotel - California at Mason Streets. Dusk and night views from postcards. Printed on the back: "Twenty floors above the crest of historic Nob Hill is this glass-walled tower with a 50 mile panoramic view of sparkling cities, two mighty bridges, the blue Pacific! Truly the worlds most spectacular cocktail lounge!" It has been in continuous use since it opened in 1939. During World War II, many couples made plans to meet at the "Top o' the Mark" when the war ended,  just as they did in New York at the Empire State Building.

1965 - Powell Street between Post and Sutter Streets, looking south - Does anyone remember Tiny's, Andy's or Belli Gifts? This candid shot was taken about where the Sir Francis Drake Hotel entrance is located.
1965 - Powell at Pine Street - A nice view of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel - Remember the "wide-track" Pontiacs?
1965 - Chinatown - Grant Avenue, just north of Sacramento Street, facing south - Notice "Kan's", The Republic Hotel, and Old St. Mary's Church (at California). On a personal note, in the early 1980s I remember a man playing a toy piano on this sidewalk singing for donations. Suddenly the bells rang from the church and he quickly changed his song to very serious rendition of "The Bells of St. Mary's" in a perfect imitation of Bing Crosby's voice.
1965 - Geary at Powell Streets - Union Square - The cars, fashions and businesses of the era. I didn't put the modern day photo with this because this photo is too wonderful in full frame. Notice the Fitzhugh Building (on the right) which was torn down in 1979, even though it was a National Historic Landmark (#76000519). Sak's Fifth Avenue was built on the site the following year
1973 - The Condor Club - Broadway and Columbus. Carol Doda danced nude here in 1964 and the club became the "first topless" bar" anywhere (allegedly). Carol made an entrance coming down from the ceiling on top of a white piano (attached to cables). In 1983 a bizarre incident happened between Jimmy Ferrozzo, the bouncer and his girlfriend, Theresa Hill, an exotic dancer. Though it was 4 am, they thought it might be fun to make love on top of the infamous piano, when the lift was accidentally turned on. They were so busy making out, they didn't notice (or care) that the piano was going up. It hit the ceiling with Jimmy on top of Theresa. Jimmy rolled off at the last second, but was pinned against the ceiling. She lay next to him screaming. It wasn't until 7 am the next morning when a janitor heard Theresa screams that help was summoned. She survived by a few inches, because his muscular build kept the piano from crushing her, as well .. but he was dead.
1906 - Market Street (800 Block). The Quick Lunch was one of many small, temporary food stands downtown in the months after the earthquake.  Though there was little to no business downtown in the months after the earthquake, many people came to the city to look at the ruins, so vendors  like these peppered the downtown area to cater to the tourists.
Notice the food vendor is also selling picture postcard photos of the  earthquake damage. Many photos like these are images I have posted  on this page. He was wisely located next to a post office box (on the right). The apple box served as a stool, if you wanted to dine at the "counter".  The man sitting on the left was a newspaper vendor waiting for a sale.

1954 - Hamm's Beer Sign on the Brewery Roof - This sign was located  at 1550 Bryant Street for many years. Remember?

Circa 1957 - Woolworth's at Market and Powell Streets - Woolworth's replaced the Rexall Drug Store in the Flood Building in 1952 and was in that location for the next several decades. Most of us remember the smell of their famous pizza, popcorn and fried chicken takeout, plus 2 lunch counters. Christmas decorations were a huge business for them, as well. Notice the very edge of the building at the far left with Dr. Rosenblatt, Dentist. That is where Hallidie Plaza is today. The building on the left across from Woolworth's was a Bank of America for many years. A Gap Clothing Store is on the Woolworth's corner today.

1963 - Market Street, just east of 8th Street. The Orpheum Theater is on the left. John F. Kennedy was President of the U.S. until November. I didn't put a current photo with this one because the detail would be lost with the reduced size.  As you can see, the street lamps were painted gold, not navy blue. Also seen in this view are the Paramount and Embassy marquees

1936-1999 - Finocchio's Night Club - Above Enrico's Cafe at 506 Broadway.Joe Finocchio got the idea of a nightclub with men performing in drag with fantastic costumes when a patron jokingly went on the stage of his club and did a number that the crowd enjoyed. He opened the Finocchio's on June 15, 1936. The club was not a gay club, but was strictly for the entertainment and fun, though a number of gay performers worked there, some were straight, as well. Finocchio's was "off limits" during World War II, not for the entertainment, but for selling liquor to the military outside the authorized hours.  On December 31, 1943 the ban was lifted after Joe Finnochio and other bar owners signed an agreement to limit liquor sales to military personnel to between 5 pm and midnight, though beer could be sold during the afternoon. Finocchio's was a huge favorite with tourists during the 30s through 90s. Many of the performers were stunningly beautiful... others were comics and excellent singers. Eve Finocchio, Joe's widow, decided to close the club in  late 1999 because of a $2000. a month rent increase.

The 13 secret to obtain whatever you want in life.

Plus the 3 to master your life

1). The power of thought.

2). Desire: the starting point of all achievement (the first step to riches).

3). Faith: Visualizing and believing. In the attainment of desires.

4). Autosuggestion: The medium for influencing the subconscious mind.

5). Specialize knowledge: Person experience or observation.

6). Imagination: The workshop of the mind.

7). Organize Planing: The crystallization of desire onto action.

8). Decision: The mastery of PROCRASTINATION.

9). Persistence: The sustained effort necessary to induce FAITH.

10). Power of the master mind: The driving FORCE.

11). The mystery of the sex Transmutation.

12.). The subconscious Mind: The connecting Links.

13). The brain: A Broadcasting and Receiving Station for thought.

14). The Sixth Sense: The door to the Temple of WISDOM.

15). How to outwit the six ghosts of the fear.(clearing the brain for riches)

16). The devil's Workshop. (the seventh basic evil).

IF you repeat a million times the famous Emil Coue Formula: "day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better" without mixing emotion and faith with words, you will experience no desirable result. Your subconscious mind recognizes and acts only upon thoughts that have well mixed with emotion or feeling.

THE TWENTY ONE BIRTHDAYS FOR MY SON.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for been here and to share this special time and celebrate this special moment with this now grown up man. This time sharing with me is priceless. I would like to say a few words. I thank the Mother Nature for given me the privilege to give life of my own, and to trust me with this life. As you know that we are born without knowledge, yet we get the knowledge and the experience in the process of learning and getting the purpose and the path in life. Dear son I am sorry if I hurt you in any form or shape in the process of becoming a mother to you, because you were my first child and I was a new mom with no experience. I know you are a grown up men now for the society, but to me that is only in number of years, because you will be always my baby in my heart, and I will always cherish the memories that I have when you were a child. I always remember the phone calls that we ended up with I love you more! and either you or me would say I LOVE YOU MORE AND MORE AND MORE! AND WE GO BACK AND FOR WITH MORE AND MORE AND MORE!!!!!!!.
Happy birthday my son. With love your MOM.
  • IT'S ONE THING TO SAY SEEK (INNER) SATISFACTION; ANOTHER ENTIRELY TO POINT OUT DIRECTIONS FOR DOING SO.

I would say 'Act Now': When young, we think 'we have all the time in the world'. Life is a learning curve and the more we experience, the more we 'evolve'. I don't think we are ever a finished product. So,'Act Now' instead of over thinking or trying to get everything 'right'. With where I am at in my personal 'evolution', I am asking myself "Why did I take so long to initiate A, B or C'. Of course, it's good to plan, to think things through. Sometimes (most times?!), though, our brain gets in the way. Maybe it's better to 'Shoot now - Aim later!' None of this is news... but I have been recently thinking about where all the time in the world' has gone - so Act Now are my two words.
  • TRUST YOURSELF
  • VALUE CREATION!
  • LOVE LIFE
  • LOVE YOURSELF.
  • LISTEN MORE
  • BE PATIENT!
  • BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE – GHANDI
  • ENJOY NOW OR PERHAPS KEEP LEARNING
  • ACT HUMANELY.
  • NEVER QUIT!
  • STAY STRONG!
  • KEEP GOING!
  • AM SPECIAL!
  • GROW UP
  • THE ONLY THING I WOULD TELL A YOUNGER ME IN TWO WORDS IS:   STUDY HARD!

  • DON'T QUIT.
  • LISTEN AND LEARN
  • YOU'RE ENOUGH.
  • "I CAN".
  • KEEP GOING
  • BE STRONG
'SHIT HAPPENS' - A simple existential observation that life is full of imperfections and unforeseeable events. The phrase is an acknowledgment that bad things happen to people for no particular reason. Así es la vida" or "C'est la vie..-A fictitious explanation of the origin of this phrase occurs in the 1994 movie Forrest Gump. During his capricious run, an enthusiastic fan running alongside him points out to Forrest that he has just stepped in a pile of dog feces. When Forrest replies, "It happens," the fan replies, "What, shit?", to which Forrest replies, "Sometimes". The fan is then unwittingly inspired to create the "Shit Happens" bumper sticker.
